We just wanted to note how happy we were to see you all at Playlist Live in Orlando, and thank you for dropping by our booth! The YouTube crew had a really great time talking to you and chatting with Shay Carl, iJustine, Dan Brown, KassemG, Charles Trippy, and The Will of DC for our star-studded panel.

We hope that our presentations on the importance of Google + integration, the changes to our suggested videos algorithm, and the exciting Next Vlogger program were useful to you.

Growing Audience for Our Creators Through YouTube Partner Promotion

Creativity runs rampant on YouTube thanks to you - our amazing YouTube creators - who collectively upload over 60 hours of entertaining, engaging and inspiring videos every minute. We know the whole creation process keeps you busy and that it can sometimes be hard to find time to promote your channels.

In the past, we’ve tried to ease this burden by promoting you with Featured Videos and other on-site placements. We will continue to do this, but we want to allow you to focus more on creating the best content you can and help you find new audiences off YouTube.

To this end, we are happy to announce YouTube Partner Promotion, a new program that aims to grow your audience by bringing together new and existing tools to showcase your content on YouTube and relevant sites across the web. The newest of these tools, automatically turns your videos into ad units and places them on the Google Display Network where they can reach 92% of the internet population. You can think of it as extending Featured Videos across the web.

How does this work?
If you are a partner in the US, UK, India or Australia, you are eligible to have your content promoted on and off YouTube through this program. In fact, there is nothing you have to do--you are already opted in and YouTube will handle all the promotion. We cannot guarantee how much promotion you will receive but we expect that thousands will receive support. What we can guarantee is that we will continue to look for ways to expand YouTube Partner Promotionboth globally and with new featuresand let you know as soon as we do.

AnyoneButMeWebSeries is March’s YouTube partner On The Rise

Congratulations to AnyoneButMeWebSeries! The award-winning web series is our featured “On The Rise” partner for March and takes the stage in the “Spotlight” section of the YouTube homepage today.

 Shot on location in NYC and LA and written and produced by Susan Miller and Tina Cesa Ward, Anyone But Me centers around gay, straight and ethnically diverse teenagers who deal with all-too-common questions about identity and modern relationships. Throughout the series, viewers may identify with the emotional struggles of moving, relationship changes and being true to yourself. The third and final season just wrapped, and you can watch the complete series on their YouTube channel. Check out the video below for more background on the series and its history:

We love making drama. And we love making it on the web. It’s as if the gods gave us a piece of this huge creative territory and said “Own it. Plant weird, wonderful new things. Do what you want here.” As creators, we couldn’t ask for more. Anyone But Me is a rare thing in the indie television world. For one thing, we don’t have zombies. (Alas!) We get off on writing about real humans and their relationships. Anyone But Me launched in 2008. After our second season, we had a never been done before Webathon, and the fans funded us for Season 3. So many people had our back. We got press in Fast Company. Salon.com, The LA Times, Tubefilter, AfterEllen. And we collected a lot of cool awards along the way. But it’s thanks to the passion of our fans that we’re here! Directing for the Web 101 is a workshop where participants can share best practices, ask questions, and find out from the instructor great ways to get a strong performance from your actors. Ideally suited for beginners and intermediate level directors who are either just starting out or are interested in taking their directing to the next level.

What is focal length vs focal distance? Why is lens speed important? How do I control depth of field? What are some cool tricks that I can use to light a scene with minimal resources? WHY IS ALL OF MY FOOTAGE BLUE???? Cinematography 101 reviews how you can use the technical to articulate the creative. Besides things like 180 degree rule and law of thirds, we talk about some of the mystery buttons on the camera that will help you improve your image as well as your understanding of why things work the way that they do. Ideally suited for beginners and intermediate level cinematographers who are either just starting out or feel that they need a better technical understanding of the mechanics of their camera.

How do I promote my friend’s band? How do I turn myself into the next internet personality? How do I share the fun food that I make in my kitchen with the rest of the world? We review such concepts as B-roll, how to avoid talking head footage, and using links to build a network of like-minded people.

Improving video awesomeness with one click

Whether you’re perfecting your double backflip at the park, capturing a flash mob on your phone, or enjoying singing in a subway, it’s not easy to get your video quality perfect. Sometimes videos suffer from symptoms like “shaky-camera-itis” or “augmented-darkness-levels” that keep viewers from seeing just how awesome your video really is. We made a big step last year with the YouTube Video Editor, and now we’re adding a feature that does the work of curing these symptoms for you.

If you upload a video that’s shaky or dark, we’ll automatically offer to fix it for you, creating an updated version of your video on YouTube.

When you upload a video that could use a fixup, you’ll see a notification bar on the Upload page and in your Video Manager. Click the button to fix it, and you’ll see a side by side preview to decide if you want to accept the edits.

Select “Okay” if you’d like us to update your video to the preview version (you can always undo this later). Even if you’re uploading a video from your mobile device, the Video Manager on the desktop will give you a notice if this video can be cured as well. Here’s an overview:



This breakthrough in video awesomeness is possible thanks to our research team who expanded on the “I’m Feeling Lucky” button launched last year, automatically detecting if stabilization or color correction would be helpful for you. The result is a one-click option rolling out over the next few days that cures these two symptoms now, and more planned in the future. 

So you keep capturing those awesome moments, and we’ll keep on developing ways to help you make those videos even more awesome.

Analytics Engagement Report Available for Download

As we mentioned last week, we’re updating Related and Recommended videos to help provide viewers with a more engaging and enjoyable experience on YouTube.

To help you make the most of this change, we’ve created a new downloadable Watch Time report (currently for YouTube Partners only) that displays new metrics like Estimated Total Watch Time for particular videos and at a channel level. This data is available in YouTube Analytics, found by clicking the option in the banner displayed at the top of the Analytics Views report. Here’s what it looks like:



One helpful use of this report is to look at the videos receiving the most total Watch Time and least total Watch Time, in conjunction with your Analytics Audience Retention report to find your most engaging videos. Looking at these videos individually and collectively can help surface best practices, helping you find the right mix of elements like video style, length, promotion and more. To note, these reports can be the most helpful once you have at least one week’s worth of data, since video views and channel traffic can vary daily.

You can learn more in the Help Center and here are some best practices to get you started.  We’ll be rolling out additional YouTube Analytics Watch Time metrics more broadly in the coming weeks.

Monetize Lots of Videos - At Once!

Do you want to monetize more of your videos at once? Starting today you can monetize multiple videos through a simple, single flow. Here’s how:

On the Video Manager, select videos you want to monetize by checking the box next to each video. You can currently select up to ten videos at the same time. In the Actions drop-down menu, select Monetize.


Next, you’ll opt-in the video for different advertising formats. Then, click “Monetize.”

Finally, you’ll see a confirmation that your videos were monetized:

This update will be available to all U.S.-based partners initially, but we’re rolling it out globally over the coming months. You can also find others ways that YouTube can help you discover your voice and improve your skills, build larger audiences, and monetize your content at the YouTube Creator Playbook 2.

Networks can now segment revenue per channel

We’ve heard feedback from network partners that they wanted to be able to more easily share revenue reporting with their individual channel creators. We’ve also heard from these creators that they wanted to quickly be able to access this data.

We understand that with more transparency and better data creators are able to make more informed decisions about their content. To that end, we’ve updated our reporting tools to allow networks to easily share revenue data with individual content creators if they so choose.

If you’re a network, you can enable this feature by clicking into the CMS user management tool and selecting ‘enable revenue visibility’. Individual creators will then be able to see both their estimated NET revenue and additional viewership data in the Insight tool.

Transitioning ads.youtube.com to AdWords for video

As you may have seen in your ads.youtube.com account, on April 12th, 2012, we will say a fond farewell to ads.youtube.com as we retire this interface. We’ve listened to your feedback and learned a lot about what video advertisers need to be successful with our tools. In an effort to give you more control over your ads, we’ve created AdWords for video (beta). This new tool streamlines the process of creating a campaign, has access to more ad formats and ad inventory, and gives you powerful tools to understand and improve the performance of your video ads.

All accounts have now been transitioned to AdWords for video. 

To manage your account or create a new one, login at adwords.google.com/video. All ads.youtube promotions can still be found in the AdWords interface (adwords.google.com) and any advertiser can create a new video campaign by logging in at adwords.google.com/video

What’s happening to Promoted Videos?
This awesome YouTube video format isn't going anywhere - it's just joining the TrueView family of video ad formats with a fresh look.

  • Promotions alongside YouTube search results are now known as TrueView in-search.
  • Promotions alongside YouTube videos and content on the Google Display Network are now known as TrueView in-display.

Changes to Related and Recommended Videos

The last time you went channel surfing, did you enjoy (or remember) the 20 TV shows you flipped through, or just the shows you watched all the way through? Would you recommend the 20 you surfed through to a friend, or the ones you actually watched? To make the videos you watch on YouTube more enjoyable, memorable, and sharable, we're updating our Related and Recommended videos to better serve videos that keep viewers entertained.

For years, the Related and Recommended videos we served to the right of the player and on the homepage represented our best prediction of what people wanted to watch next. We regularly tweaked the system that selects these videos to keep it evolving with the rest of the site.

Today, this system serves videos based on the number of clicks they receive, which would be like suggesting a TV show based on how many people briefly flipped on a channel while surfing. But clicks aren’t always the best way to predict whether you’ll be interested in a video. Sometimes thumbnails don’t paint the whole picture, or a video title isn’t descriptive.

We’ve been experimenting with the way we offer Related and Recommended videos, focusing on video engagement to get people to the videos they like more quickly. In particular, we’ve discovered that time watched is one of the best indicators of a viewer's engagement. As a result, we’ll be focusing more prominently on time watched in providing Related and Recommended videos starting next week. While we'll still be looking at clicks, engagement will become the leading indicator for serving these videos.

So, if you’re making videos that keep people engaged, Related and Recommended videos will begin showing your videos more prominently. On the flip side, videos that don’t will not be surfaced as prominently, which will impact a video’s viewcounts over time. How can you adapt to these changes? The same as you always have — create great videos that keep people engaged. It doesn’t matter whether your videos are one minute or one hour. What matters is that your audience stops clicking away and starts watching more of your videos.

To help you, we have an Analytics Audience Retention Report, a list of best practices, and answers to frequently-asked questions to find ways ranging from content to programming. As this kicks off next week, we’ll continue to share resources on this blog to help drive even more audiences to your videos and to your channel.

Help our March “On The Rise” nominees reach the homepage


Each month, we identify four YouTube partners whose Channels have experienced significant growth and are on the cusp of really taking off for our On The Rise program. This March, our nominees include a chef, an artist, a prankster and producers. We’re excited to bring you some fledgling partners who still have a ways to go to hit the 100,000 subscriber mark - even if you haven’t heard of them yet, we think you’ll enjoy what they bring to the YouTube table.

And you can help them reach their growth goals, starting with the opportunity for one of these partners to be featured on the YouTube homepage. Check out their videos below and vote for your favorite in the top right corner of the Official YouTube Blog. In addition to your votes, each Channel will be evaluated on criteria such as viewer engagement and Channel optimization techniques to decide which partner will be featured on the homepage, Google+, Facebook and Twitter at the end of the month.

In past months, partners like CaliforniaTravelTips and marydoodles have gained many subscribers thanks to your support. The poll will be open until March 15th at 5pm PT, so don’t forget to vote for your favorite Channel. Check back to see who secured the homepage feature on March 29th.

AnyoneButMeWebSeries
Anyone But Me is an acclaimed web series centered around common teenage concerns like fighting stereotypes and doing the right thing. Though it’s just about to wrap up after three seasons, you can get an introduction to this award-winning drama and even watch the complete series on the ABM YouTube Channel.
