Giving you more control and convenience for publishing videos


Many of you have told us you want more control and convenience when publishing videos to your YouTube channel. You want features that will save you time and give you more flexibility as you build an audience on your channel. Starting today all creators around the world will have three new publishing features: public videos that don’t notify subscribers, adding custom thumbnails while the video uploads, and a new tags editor.

Public videos that don’t notify subscribers

Have you ever wanted to upload a “behind the scenes” video to your channel and don’t want this video to take up valuable real estate in subscribers’ feeds? Or uploaded a long video but also wanted to publish short clips? Maybe you want to publish a quick video without interrupting your publishing schedule?

We’ve heard many creators want to upload public videos that don’t notify their subscribers in their homepage feed, via email (for opted in subscribers), and in youtube.com/my_subscriptions.  Your default will remain that your subscribers are notified about your public uploads, but now you can choose to uncheck this option to “Notify subscribers” in the Advanced Settings section during the upload process.  If you use our batch upload  features in CMS, we also have an equivalent XML tag available. Public videos that you choose not to notify subscribers about will still be discoverable through search, suggested videos, and on your channel.




Upload a custom thumbnail right after the upload begins

In April, we launched one of the most requested features by creators, the ability to set the custom thumbnail directly in the upload interface, while the video is uploading. We received a lot of positive feedback about this change, but many of you pointed out that this would be even more convenient if you could upload the custom thumbnail earlier during the upload process, rather than towards the end.  Beginning today, you can pick your preferred thumbnail right away, shortly after the video upload starts.  

New tags editor

We now have  a simpler interface to input and manage your tags.  Just type in the text for each tag, and either add a comma or hit enter.  This will store the text as a distinct tag.  Once the tag has been entered, the text will be surrounded by a blue box which indicates that the word or phrase you entered has been entered as a tag.

  1. The new tags editor is abhorrent. As a Youtuber that tends to upload a large quantity of videos, the ability to copy and paste tags from older videos in the same series was absolutely essential. I just don't understand what this changes, apart from making uploaders lives more annoying. I'm usually fine with changes, but really, this is not a 'simpler interface' than a single textbox.

    1. Copying and pasting tags is still possible. You have to have your cursor at the very end of the tag field and then you have to hit ctrl+a then ctrl+c, I haven't had any luck attempting it with going into the menu but the shortcuts work, just not as great as before.

    2. Copy/Paste of tags doesn't work well. I can copy and paste them all I want, but it ends up merging tags where it shouldn't, and as a person who still believes in the myth that tag placement matters (ie: the first word is the most important), it's difficult to rearrange the tags without starting all over again.

      Some people have had luck pasting all the tags into a notepad (or textedit for mac) screen and making it one long list before pasting it in to YT again.

    3. The new tag editor is horrible for those of us that upload many videos with common themes and therefore common tags because the new tag editor does not allow for copy/paste as did the old tag editor. It has caused much frustration amongst users and in my personal experience is making the upload and edit of videos a very painful unpleasant experience. I feel as though Google is not thinking out this new change and is discouraging the upload of videos, the raison d’etre of YouTube, the bread and butter of this service. I have tried many tricks to get it to work, all failed. Changes should allow us to work smart not work stupid. To be efficient smart users we need the copy/paste feature.

    4. Further clarification:

      The new tag editor fails to allow the copy/paste of multi-word tags. It is specifically multi-word tags that I am not able to copy/paste. I have tried separating my commas, separating with quotation marks and the tag editor will not create a multi-word tag, rather it will break up the words and create multiple tags. For example: "United States of America" when copy/pasted creates 4 separate tags: "United" "States" "of" "America". This is truly annoying. I have sent feedback to YouTube. How do we encourage a fix? I would love to know if anyone at YouTube is listening to its partners.

    5. Yes this new tag editor sucks because you also cannot copy your tags from the field either, if you want to place a similar set of tags, you have to do each on manually. This is really annoying.

It would be nice if we had the option to actually make our videos show up in all of our subscribers' sub boxes... judging from what i've heard lots of my friends saying, it seems like we've had that "public video that doesn't show up in sub boxes" feature for months now. Can we have a feature that lets us actually be seen by our subscribers?

  4. All the changes are good and all, but I really dislike that if a video has over 1000 views, that in the Video Manager, it just says 1K. For instance, I have a video with 2,289 views, however, it just says 2K. I would prefer to see the actual amount of views, rather than just "2K".

    2. +1. I can't understand why they would change this. Does it use up server resources or something? Please, Please change that back! The video manager is the first place I go to when I fire up my PC, now it's a bummer to have to click the video link to see the total views... Ahhh, generating more views by making us have to click the video link to see the view count. Hmm, could that be it?

  5. Would be nice if "all creators around the world" included those of us who don't have adsense too. Out of the 3 new features, I only have the new tag tool, which quite honestly is the most useless update thusfar.

  6. Please give subscribers more thumbnails of actual things they want to see, their subscriptions. They need to stop being in a line feed and more of a matrix like fashion like when you click on my subscriptions. No more of this highlights, when someone want to sub to a person they want to see 100%, if they don't they can unsub, but make it the user's choice. I get 2-4 hours of spotlight cause the feed goes so fast, and I get to talk to only 10-15% of my viewers. I know you want to promote certain vids, but people would watch more if they could see more of what they wanted, not recommended. This is why people resort to FaceBook & Twitter. If your notification system actually worked and bulletins worked, people would not have to go outside the box for entertainment or notifications.

    Please I love this site, it's sad to see it withering with peoples choices being taken away due to algorithms and lack of visibility.

    Less tabs too, have the comments likes and views all on that persons channel like it used to, people will see it more and things can actually go truly viral again. Being an old skool youtuber, I feel my channel is truly bugged as I don't talk to my 160k people, and haven't been able to for 2 years. We shouldn't build a business hoping to catch an algorithm wave it should be based on consistency of good quality entertainment. Now I feel we have to post so much more frequently just to be seen, which if people got notified all the time, I would not worry about having to stay in constant annoying touch with my viewers. We build a rapport with our viewers and when they don't get notified they forget about us, which then the algorithm thinks they are no longer interested, it's a bad cycle.

    Sorry but if I "subscribed" to a newspaper and the newspaper deliverer only brought me the issues he though I would enjoy, I would of fired him ages ago.

    1. Exactly how I feel. I work hard to build a subscription base. But when I upload a video the chances my subscribers will even know is slim, instead they see YouTube recommendations that clutter their feed, and if my content did post to their feed it is quickly pushed out. Due to this I have to resort to facebook and stumble upon to push views. Not to mention as a youtube viewer I am tired of garbage videos that youtube thinks I will be interested in just because they went viral. I care more about intellectual content than the latest "funny fail" video.

  7. I am not a fan of the new tag system. When I paste in my tags (some of them have quotation marks), the first five or so will be one large tag. If I remove them all (one by one) and paste them in again, it adds them separately. Adding commas also seem to save the commas in the tags when you paste them in.

    I would much rather have the old tag system. Instead, give some transparency on the finer details of tags: is there a difference between Let's and Lets? Can the system find me on single words if I only have them as part of a sentence or must I add them alone as well?

    At least, please reconsider the new tag system.

  9. Why were the view counts on the video manager changed to show Ks instead of the actual number of views? This seems like something that was changed with really really popular people in mind, but it's worse than how it was before if you don't get astronomical numbers of views on every video.

    I haven't looked at the new tag system much, but so far it seem like a good idea in theory that wasn't executed very well. It's pretty difficult to edit tags especially if I, for example, want to add a new tag in between two others. Or reorder a few of them.

    The rest sounds good though, more flexibility and options are always good; it's just changing features or pages into things that are aesthetically and especially functionally worse that annoys me.

I have noticed not all of my subscribers are being notified when I upload a video, even though I post it publicly it doesn't show up in their sub box. i have had this problem for a while now. as a result my more recent video barely make 30 views the first day, and reach barely 80 or 100 by the end of the first week, despite my having over 1,000 subscribers. then weeks after a video has been uploaded i get informed people are then seeing it for the first time. It would be much appreciated if this issue was corrected.

    also, it would be very nice to be notified when a user unsubscribes, as well as when a user subscribes.

  12. Please bring back the ACTUAL view numbers and not 1k, 2k, 3k, etc via Video Manager. I don't want to go into each video to view the number, which will also cause for the viewing number to increase everytime I view it.

  13. Same request for the view count. Or at least just add an option to switch back to the old way of counting (without the k). It's not such a big deal with views, but it is with commentary. We can't see a difference between 1000 coms and 1999 coms on a video. I read all my comments, but read them once a day. With this new interface I can't tell if I had a lots of new comment on my video or not, so I have to go to the commentary pages for EVERY video. When you upload at least one video a day it's a lot of wasted time. So please, go back on this. Thx

  15. Bring back the normal View counts. 3K,4K and so on tells us "smaller" channels nothing!
    Just like with my total view count. On the "Dashboard" it tells me 2M... but in reality that number is 2.85M...

  16. Why did you change view counts in the video manager to display only 1k, 2k, 20k etc? I'm a small channel and I like to see EVREY VIEW I am getting, so please revert this change!

    Also, it's great that we can now make videos public without subs being notified, but to be honest this has already been happening for months, if not years. Please can you fix the notification system so that we can reach ALL of our subs when we publish a video?

    Finally, remove 'highlights'. When a person subscribes to a channel, it's because they want to see ALL videos by that channel. They might decide not to watch one or two, but they should get the choice. At the moment you have taken choice away from a good 80-90% of people! Why would you do this?

    Thank you for reading and I like the idea of being able to upload a thumbnail before the video has finished uploading.

  17. I agree with everything about viewcounts, please let us see actual numbers. BUT there is something else thats been bothering me for a long time now: Often when people subscribe, i get the mail notofication that they did but youtube dont register it. So in other words they try to subscribe and think they became subscribed, but they did not. Subscribers also get unsubscribed at random for no reason. I am sure of this because ive payed attention to it for months now, and got it confirmed by multiple subribers that i 'lost' and regained. For a small channel its hard enough getting subscribers and views without this bug. Please look into it.

  18. I don't like the new tags interface. It's nice that it's similar to how mobile devices combine objects, but having the ability to move around the tags, and improvement on copy/pasting of the tags is needed.

    An additional little change that recently happened that I'm not fond of is in the Video Manager how the view count is now simply abbreviated "1k, 2k, 3k", and so on. To a smaller user, there's a huge difference between 1,010 and 1,800 views.

    Let me hover my mouse over the stats to view the accurate number at the very least. Don't make me have to click on the analytics, and wait for an entirely different page to load just to see the number.

  20. I'd like the view counts to be returned to showing the exact figures, rather than a roundabout 1K or the like. Especially for smaller channels, we'd like to see exactly how many views we're getting each time.
    And although I like the concept of being able to upload a video without notifying subscribers, surely it would be better if we actually sorted out the problem of public videos not showing up in subscription boxes until days later, or often not at all? I understand that you're all trying to expand the site etc, but I think a lot more creators would far prefer it if you fixed all the things that don't work already instead of adding more to cover it.
    And if you could bring back the subscriptions box on channel pages, I would love that. I always liked how you could go to a channel and see who that person was subscribed to; it's (in my opinion) a better way of discovering new creators and therefore helps build everyone's audiences.

  22. Yes, I hate the new 1K, 2K, 3K, thing with the views being rounded off. Why did they change it like that? I wish they'd just bring it back to the exact number of views and leave it alone.

    It's always annoying how websites are constantly changing stuff around. My best guess is the reason they do that is to prevent spam bots from adapting to their website format.

    1. Definitely, make the tags draggable. It's bad enough it's now slowing us down to a snail's pace. But not being able to reorder or edit our tags is ridiculous. What is YouTube thinking?

  26. Your "notify subscribers" check/uncheck doesn't work !
    I unchecked it to make public many unlisted videos I didn't want to show up in my subscribers feed.. guess what ? They can see it even if I unchecked.. thanks for the fail :/

    And of course please go back to the real number of views..

    And please check your views counter which isn't accurate and don't count every views I paid with adwords, etc..

    Why don't you tell us your real purpose with all of those negative changes since March 27 ?

  30. Fix the thumbnails! For the past four or five days, any video uploaded won't either display the three thumbnails selected, or will show them, but won't save them whenever you decide to change from the default thumbnail YouTube selects (The one in the middle).

    And yes, bring the original view count back. 1K, 2K, etc, etc, is so vague.

    Things were fine as they were. There's no need to try and change things around, it just makes more problems and more unhappy users. If it ain't broke, don't fix it and all...

  42. I have been told by MANY of my subscribers for a few months now, that they don't get notified when I upload a new video. It would be nice to know that when I use my time to make a video, my subscribers could actually see it without having to go check my channel if I have uploaded new videos.
